The Louis Vuitton Noe was the world’s first bucket bag. Originally created in 1932, it is the second oldest style from the famous fashion house.
Louis Vuitton often created new bags as a solution to what we now refer to as ‘first world problems’. The Speedy bag (now undoubtably one of the brands most coveted styles) was first made for Audrey Hepburn who needed Vuitton’s keep-all made smaller so it was suitable for everyday use.
Similarly, when Gaston-Louis Vuitton was contacted by a champagne producer who needed a stylish bag in which he could transport his vintages; the result was a sleek bucket bag with a drawstring to secure the bottles from rattling. (For reference, the full size Noe holds five bottles of bubbly…)
Named ‘Noe’ in reference to the biblical hero Noah who, when he left the Ark after the flood, planted grape vines on the mountains of Ararat.
The Louis Vuitton Noe was originally crafted in a pale champagne coloured leather but can now be purchased in Epi leather, Azur Damier and monogram. It may be one of Louis Vuitton’s oldest designs, but the bucket bag re-emerges as a favourite style almost every year. Versatile, practical and understated, every wardrobe should have one – why not invest in the original?
