I realise that in this muggy 23 degree heat, you’re unlikely to be thinking “I really need a new coat” but the next season is upon us and with some clever shopping (at least via the window until we get paid) we can build the essential Autumn capsule wardrobe in time for the cooler weather.
The general consensus amongst G&T customers is that Autumn is the best season for dressing. Knitwear, boots and leather jackets re-emerge from the back of the cupboard and we all feel much more comfortable shopping than we did over the Summer when, like, everything was cropped. Fine if you have washboard abs like Britney, not so fine if you like bread.
Use your favourite season to invest in wardrobe staples that you can keep bringing out year after year. Yes it’s easy and cheap to bulk buy from fast-fashion sites, but that ain’t no good for landfill (‘cos let’s face it, these things often require the bin after the 3rd or 4th wash…)
We’ve picked our favourite Autumn trends so you can shop with purpose and bag the pieces you’ll love to wear during the chilly months.
Seen on the catwalks of Victoria Beckham, Calvin Klein, Balenciaga and Tom Ford – animal print is back in a big way and we love that it remains a pattern you can wear as much or as little as you like. Go low-key with a silk neck scarf, pair a leopard skirt with a black polo neck or (our favourite) go wild and dress head-to-toe a là Gigi for Max Mara.
Taking the Biscuit
A favourite of ours for its pure versatility; whether it’s caramel, biscuit, chocolate (hungry yet?) or toffee – there’s a shade of tan to suit every skin tone. It’s true that a camel coat will never go out of style so if you happen across one you love this season – buy it. Otherwise, don’t be afraid to go all out with a combination of these warm colours that will compliment the last of your Summer glow and still keep you looking radiant through to January.
My personal favourite of the season – if I ever needed an excuse to buy a saddle bag and cover myself in fringe (I didn’t) – this is it. Channel your inner cowgirl in a Western style shirt, studded leather boots and an Aztec inspired blanket wrap and saddle up for the chilly season.
So flattering and easy to wear with trousers or dresses, slouchy boots were seen at Chanel, Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant. We love the proportional contrast of slouch boots with skinny jeans (because it definitely makes our legs look slimmer) so pair yours with your favourite denim.
We’ve seen super-sized trainers on the fash-pack since mid-Summer but this boot/trainer hybrid remains a must have though to Autumn; it’s all about being comfy and cool.
Block heeled and round toed, the pump is back for Autumn/Winter and is perfect for taking you from the office to cocktails. Tip: keep an eye on our website for classic styles from Salvatore Ferragamo and Chanel…
Bags of Style
A handbag is possibly the easiest addition to make to our new season wardrobe and this year, there are more than a few trends we’re gonna wanna get behind…this might mean more than one bag is purchased. Soz in advance to my bank.
The always popular faux fur we see on coats and gilets each season has now spread to handbags and we were quite taken by the styles that look a little like Cousin It…just keep him out of the rain!
The oversized ‘grab bag’ is another style we can appreciate for its practicality because let’s face it, we do need to take the kitchen sink with us in the mornings. Favourites include those from Victoria Beckham and Furla – just don’t fill it to the brim if you want to channel catwalk-chic and not bag lady.
It’s true the words “i’m a slag for logos” have been broadcast by myself on the public domain previously and i’m not afraid to say it again. Not one for low-key/”that’s too brazen for me” – stick a logo on it and i’m sold. Whether it’s Gucci’s double G’s or Fendi’s monogram, wear your favourite brand with pride and absolutely zero shame.
